Ning Haoxiang's personal project "Pingping Portrait Studio" will open at 4:00 PM on May 25, 2024, at Bigger Art Space, and will run until July 7.
The artist has set up a nostalgic portrait gallery scene in the exhibition hall, taking on the roles of both the proprietor and the portrait artist. During the project, he will offer custom portrait painting services to guests.Since 2012, Ning Haoxiang has been engaged in the practice of portrait series painting, which has now spanned twelve years. Through meticulous observation of human faces and a deep understanding of painting, he has chosen various subjects for his portraits, including friends, former classmates, relatives from his hometown, strangers he met online, and even famous personalities (politicians, celebrities, criminals, etc.) taken directly from the internet. With a solid background in painting, he seems less concerned with how "good" the paintings are, focusing instead on the interplay between known painting techniques and the depiction of different individuals. He explores a subtle balance between form and likeness, imbued with an Eastern aesthetic, and seems to reach the latent spiritual dimensions of each character.
From a historical perspective, portrait painting as a tradition has evolved globally with the stages of societal development. In today's image-saturated world, what significance does portrait painting hold for us? This may be the question the artist seeks to explore.
Would you like a portrait of your own?
